It all comes to a screeching hault...

I had no trouble keeping myself busy while pregnant. Besides all of the travel, I was working full time as a first grade teacher and pretty much conducting my life as usual. Of course, by the end of the day, my ankles were swollen, my brain was fried and I was exhausted. As Bob would say, stick a fork in her, she is done! Little did I know, that was about to become a reality.

I was excited to go to the doctor for my 27 week appointment. I wanted to see those little munchkins and see how much they had grown! I could feel each of them moving, rolling and kicking and my belly definitely proceeded me everywhere!

I had my visit with the doctor and he said her thought all looked good, but he wanted confirmation with an ultrasound. My belly was measuring about 33 weeks when I was only 27 weeks pregnant. I did no care, it meant my babies were growing and I just went along with them!

The babies were moving around on the ultrasound and we even got some really cool pictures of them. While I was waiting for the doctor to come back in the room after reviewing my pics, I was thinking of my evening plans. We were going out to dinner with Bob's parents to one of my favorite seafood restaurants. A funky, pretty upscale place...I was craving yummy fish and rich, cheesy side dishes.

I was about to find out that those culinary delights would have to be had another time. My doctor came to me and said my cervix was thinning and it was getting to a point that caused him a bit of concern. Therefore, he was going to have to put me on bedrest for the duration of my pregnancy. UM....WHAT????? Was he reading the wrong reports or something. I felt fine, my twins were thriving and I HAD A FUN DINNER PLANNED! Nope. I was not going to dinner. I was not going to be able to teach my first graders for the last 4 days of school.

I felt like he was saying, go directly to jail, do not pass go...of course I wanted to do what was best for the health of my children, but seriously!! Bedrest?!

My first job though was to go to the hospital. The doctor said he wanted me to get a set of steroid shots. All I could think of was body builders or something. What I came to realize is that they are used to "beef up" the babies lungs in case they do come early. It would help the babies avoid or not need much breathing help when they were born. So off I went to the hospital and off Bob went to the seafood restaurant for dinner. He offered to not go, but I wanted him to be able to enjoy the seafood I would now just drool over..

After getting "shot," I had to wait around and they monitored the babies heartbeats for an hour. Kinda cool to just sit in a quiet room and listen to the babies hearts beat away. Being "grounded" as I called it, would, as I later realized, be a true test of a lot of things for me, but if I close my eyes, I can still hear those heartbeats and now I can put them to faces...all worth it.
